In the hills of the Appalachia Mountains, a single Southern woman raised Bruce Parker to do what he had to in order to survive. While acknowledging the complex history that comes with being Southern, he remains proud of where he is from and his accent. He attended an expensive private liberal arts college and learned how affluent Americans live in spite of money always being tight in his family. These contradictory experiences sparked an interest in issues related to social class in America - particularly regarding the South.
After graduating from Antioch College (which he attended because of recruitment material that referred to Antioch as “the boot camp for the revolution”) Bruce put his education to work as the Advocacy Coordinator for the Indiana Transgender Rights Advocacy Alliance. After two years of grassroots organizing around transgender issues in Indiana, he is putting his background in education to work as the Director of Curriculum Development for Transyouth Family Advocates.
Bruce recently completed his Masters of Science in Curriculum Studies at Purdue University. He is beginning his Ph.D. Studies in Educational Theory, Policy and Practice with a graduate minor in Women’s and Gender Studies at Louisiana State University. His research and writing focuses on curriculum theory - paying particular attention to questions of place, gender and sexuality in educational contexts. While attending LSU, he will also be serving as a residence hall director for a first year dorm focusing on creating and delivering anti-racist programming.
After being in love with a transgender queer man for several years, romantically living with a butch lesbian for six months and dating his fair share of gay men, Bruce no longer buys into categories such as gay, lesbian and bisexual. Instead, he believes that on some base level everyone is at least a little queer. He is exceedingly happy he figured that out in time to have the fun that comes along with hanging out, educating about and loving outside the limits of the binary.
