As many of you know, the U.S. Senate's rule requiring a two-thirds majority to break a filibuster is under attack and the reason is not really the few extremist judges the Senate wisely refused to confirm last go-around (some of whom are even patently unqualified), it's about the coming nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court instead.
Imagine a court full of Thomases and Scalias for the next forty years -- marriage equality? retention of the Lawrence sodomy decision if it's challenged? right to privacy? continued progress toward LGBT people being designated a 14th amendment suspect class? -- Forget them all!
Right now there are a handful of Republican Senators who could decide whether there is real debate over Shrub's Supreme Court nominees or just having those nominees rubber stamped. Sen. Dick Lugar is one of them. This could come up for a vote as early as next week. He needs to hear from you NOW!
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's (R-TN) plan for the radical elimination of the 200-year-old filibuster in order to pave an easy path for controversial nominees to the Supreme Court is called the "nuclear option," and there are some Republicans who may think it goes too far. Tell Sen. Lugar and the rest of these Senators you think it does.
Here's what to do:
- Sign the People For the American Way petition now at http://pfaw.kintera.org/SaveTheFilibuster.
- This weekend, e-mail Lugar (email@example.com),
- then send this to friends and family in states with Senators on this list,
- then e-mail the other Senators on the list below (most have links on their Senate websites).
- And, first thing Monday morning, call Lugar's office -- (202) 224-4814.
