The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren ISBN: 0-452-26392-1 I briefly mentioned this book in that book memes that Scott sent me. This is one of my favorite books and listing it on the memes made me remember to go back and read it. A gay love story set in the 70's, The Front Runner captures the fierce beauty and pain of a dedicated runner's dreams - and the prejudices that threaten the powerful love between two men. This book is one of the top selling gay novels of all time.

As a side note, I struck up a correspondence with Ms. Warren a few years ago and we've written back and forth now for years. She is unfailingly polite and kind in our communication. I always make sure to send her a Christmas card. After all, she wrote one of the pioneering novels of the gay sub-genre. And she wrote it well.

Harlan's Race by Patricia Nell Warren
ISBN: 0-9641099-5-6

This sequel to The Front Runner is book two of a three book series. I've not read either of the sequels. This one was published in 1994 - twenty years after the first. The third book, Billy's Boy, was published in 1998. I just picked up this one and haven't gotten very far into it. It picks up right were the last one left off. I'm glad I re-read The Front Runner before starting Harlan's Race. It has helped to keep the characters fresh in my mind. I'm enjoying myself. I'll let you know how the next book is too.
