ACTION ALERT: WRITE YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER NOW The Human Rights Ordinance amendment for Marion County may be re-introduced before the City-County Council this fall. Fifteen votes from councilors are required to pass this important legislation. Many groups and individuals have been working diligently to make this happen. However, there must be a groundswell of public support for it, as well. We’ve had great representation recently both in the local newspaper and on television. In an effort to back up our media strategy, we need a constant stream of letters going to local newspapers to support our issues. It’s vitally important to have a consistent presence in the media leading up to this important event. The more letters received increases our chances of having at least one appear in print. Letters to the Editor are monitored regularly by elected officials and other local decision-makers. They allow our voices to be heard by thousands of readers and builds support for our issues in the community. When writing, remember to address current news items and use our main talking points: 1. Civil rights are not special rights 2. These rights affect families of GLBT people, not just GLBT individuals 3. This is an economic development issue When writing a Letter to the Editor:
  • Make one point and express it right away.
  • In refuting specific statements made by media, individuals or the newspaper, avoid making uncivil negative statements. Address relevant facts in a positive way.
  • Support your facts. Two short paragraphs are ideal.
  • Make it personal, but keep it short. Explain how it affects you, your neighbors and your community.
  • Proofread and spell check!
  • If emailing, send as text in the email rather than as an attachment. Many papers don’t open attachments.
  • Keep trying! There are many letters sent on a daily basis, so don’t be disappointed if yours isn’t published the first time.
These take you directly to the Contact Pages for the following local papers: Indianapolis Star Nuvo INtake Magazine You’d be surprised how many people read “Let It Out” in the Star! Let’s keep those letters coming in!
