The proposed Indianapolis Human Rights Ordinance that includes sexual orientation and gender identity protections will be brought back before the City-County Council this coming Monday November 21.
The ordinance is being reintroduced, so it has a new number. It is now Proposition 622.
Indiana Equality Region 8, the coalition of Indianapolis-area LGBT and allied groups, has worked together with the council co-sponsors to get this ordinance brought before the council again. The Equal Opportunity Advisory Board did an excellent job of crafting an ordinance that will create an environment much more hospitable for all of the citizens of Indianapolis.
The right wing extremists are already gearing up their attack machine to bombard the council with thousands of auto-generated emails and faxes. They are preparing their side to place hundreds of phone calls to overwhelm the council with negative comments and lies about Prop 622.
We need your support to make sure their plans do not work! Our success will depend on our ability to turn out our community at the council chambers and our ability to generate letters, calls, and visits to individual councilors.
Not all of the 15 votes we need to pass the HRO are solid - some of the councilors are still deciding how they'll vote. This is why it's important to energize our community and get everyone involved.
We urge each of you to attend the City-County Council meeting this Monday November 21 at the City-County building downtown.
Many of us will be gathering out front starting at 6:30pm. We'll have stickers for you to wear that say you support "Basic Rights for All!"
Be sure to update your information on the Indiana Equality website so we can target your local politicians in future campaigns. We'll be launching an online action center after the ordinance is reintroduced where you can email and fax the councilors and tell them how important Prop 622 is to your family.
