Councilman Gibson To Take Calls On Human Rights Ordinance

Indianapolis - Councilman Ron Gibson will take phone calls on the Human Rights Ordinance. The Human Rights Ordinance, Proposal No. 622, is currently being considered by the Council.

WHEN: Thursday, December 8, 2005 2pm-4pm

CALL-IN NUMBER: 327-4241

Initially, Councilman Gibson voted against the proposal for three reasons. First, it was believed that the federal government covered gender identity and sexual orientation. Second, Councilman Gibson was not aware of any anti-discriminatory practices in employment due to gender identity and sexual orientation and third, he was concerned with the inclusion of transgender in the original proposal that was before the Council earlier this year.

Councilman Gibson said, "I remain open-minded and I am trying to determine if this is a moral issue or an anti-discrimination proposal. It is important for me to hear personally from the constituents in Marion County on this issue." He said, "I've received hundreds of emails on this topic, but I want to speak with people one-on-one regarding their thoughts on the ordinance."
