Sent in by a gentle reader. It moved me to tears - I had to share it...

"Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a wornout coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another." - Irving Townsend

It's like layers - you start out with a few good friends, then you have some more, and before you know it you have wonderful people in your life from all different places. Each one is different from the other so they're all special to you. It's sort of like laying beautiful old blankets on the bed, one on top of the other - that's what I thought of when I read the quote.
