From an email circulated this morning...
May 2nd is primary election day for most races, but it is the election for school boards in Marion County, including Indianapolis Public Schools.
In IPS District Three, Kelly Bentley, a friend of our community, is running for a third term on the Board. Kelly has been a strong advocate for safe schools for everyone, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. It was thanks to her efforts that IPS policies against discrimination now include protection against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation for both teachers and students). She has supported efforts of students at Broad Ripple High School to form a gay-straight alliance.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Kelly has been a firm friend of the community; her stepmother Sheila Suess Kennedy is a long-time, vocal advocate for gay rights. (Ed Note: Sheila is also a bilerico.com contributor) Her stepbrother, David Suess, is President of the Indiana AIDS Fund.
Kelly has been a steadfast voice for fairness and equality in IPS. People who go to bat for our community deserve our support. But there are many other reasons to support Kelly, because she has been an unusually responsive and effective member of the board, working tirelessly to improve public education for all children. If you want evidence of her thoughtfulness, or want to know about the positions she has taken and the scope of her efforts on behalf of the children of IPS, visit her website.
If you live in IPS District #3, please vote for Kelly on May 2d, and ask your friends to do the same. Whether you live in District #3 or not, please support her campaign financially. Checks should be made payable to Kelly Bentley for School Board, and mailed to 4628 Cornelius Ave. 46208.
