"An independent and honorable judiciary is indispensable to justice in our society."
Indiana Code of Judicial Conduct, Canon 1(A)
Every so often an elected official will go to extraordinary lengths to improve the lives of those around them. In 2002, (then City-County Councilor) Karen Celestino-Horseman did just that when she introduced Proposal 278, which would have provided domestic partner benefits to Indianapolis city employees. It was a well strategized attempt, the community rallied around it, but it did fail on party lines.
Karen didn't have to bring up this controversial subject. She could have served out her stint on the council and never raised the issue. But she knew it was the right thing to do and she did it, just as she and Councilor Jackie Nytes stepped up in 2000 as the first Honorary Co-Chairs of the 1st Indiana Lambda Benefit Dinner. Sometimes people just do the right thing, and it's not something we're used to.
Karen is stepping up again, hoping to serve the citizens of Marion County by victoriously running for a position as a Marion County Superior Court Judge. From Karen's website:
"Decisions by judges impact our everyday lives. They uphold such laws as the Civil Rights Act and protect our personal freedoms guaranteed by state and federal law. It is judges who decide the fate of the errant teenager, the personal injury victim and the over 40 year old employee fired and subsequently replaced by a younger person. Most of us never plan on having a judge make decisions that will directly impact our lives; however, the unexpected happens.
As judge, we know that Karen will perform her duties impartially and without bias and prejudice. She will interpret the law honestly and will act honorably without being influenced by public opinion. She has the courage to uphold the Constitutions of Indiana and the United States, no matter the personal or political cost.
We are proud to bring you this website in which you can learn more about Karen and her professional experience and her years of community involvement, including service as a city-county councilor at-large. She will bring to the bench not only professional experience but life experience as well.
