I gave my partner the Broadway revival recording of 1776 for her birthday and I also added a special birthday playlist to our new iPod, filled with songs from Broadway musicals. So most of my week has been spent listening to songs from the following musicals:

1. 1776 (of course). A musical about the 1776 Continental Congress. How could a political science professor resist this theme? Particular faves: "Sit Down, John," "But Mr. Adams," "Yours, Yours, Yours," and "The Egg."

2. Guys and Dolls. Okay, this show has truly dreadful gender politics, but the music is fabulous! Particular faves include: "The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York," "Adelaide's Lament," "Rockin' the Boat," and "Marry the Man Today"

3. Shenandoah. I'm new to this musical, but so far I find it really interesting. John Cullum is one of the great Broadway singers and this is his signature show. No particular faves, yet.

4. Sunday in the Park with George. I'm a big fan of Stephen Sondheim, and Sunday may be my favorite of all his musicals. Here it's hard to pick a particular fave because it implies that there are some songs I like less....

As for me, I downloaded Joe Jackson's "25th Anniversary Live" a few days ago and remembered again just what a wonderful writer and performer he is. I've also been playing Margot and the Nuclear So-and-So's first album "The Dust of Retreat" quite a bit this week. They're a local band who landed a record deal last year. (And they're playing at the Midwest Music Summit next week!) And finally, I discovered Pandora, a website that let's you input an artist and then creates radio streams filled with music from similar artists. The site also lets you rate each of the songs played in order to adjust the playlist. Tres cool.

So those are my tunes for this week!
