UPDATE 2: The blogger has been identified as Lane Hudson, of Michigan. Have a look-see.

UPDATE: The New York times has an article that confirms most of the details below. Check it out...

The statement below is attributed to Brad Luna of HRC. (Yes, THE HRC.)

"The email exchanges in question between former Congressman Mark Foley and a House page have been in the possession of bloggers and media outlets for some time now. Yesterday, it came to our attention that an HRC employee, hired just last month to work for us in Michigan, was responsible for initially posting these emails on his blog. We investigated the matter, determined that HRC resources had been inappropriately used, and let him go. No one at the Human Rights Campaign, other than this individual, had any knowledge of his activities," said Brad Luna, Spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign.

Last night, we found a blog post on JoeMyGod that pointed to HRC as being behind the blog StopSexPredators, which posted the first copies of the emails that ultimately caused Foley to resign from Congress. JoeMyGod links to StopOctoberSurprises, another anonymous blog claiming to have tracked down the blogger behind StopSexPredators.

Today, StopOctoberSurprises follows up with the above quote, supposedly directly from the HRC spokesperson. We haven't been able to confirm this yet.

I don't know what to think. If the StopOctoberSurprises documentation isn't forged (and it doesn't appear to be) there is little doubt that someone was reading StopSexPredators emails from inside HRC. If the statement attributed to Brad Luna is accurate, it would appear that HRC is in damage control mode.

Was there a lone rebel in the HRC camp acting of his own accord? Could this have be a concerted effort by HRC and this guy is falling on his sword? Is it a big right-wing conspiracy to smear the largest national LGBT organization?

I don't quite know yet, but I think it may not be long before we find out. It'll be interesting to see how much more of this story unfolds in the next few days.

Thoughts? Insinuations? Accusations? Post a comment and let it fly.

I'm a Joe. My. God. fan and also saw this last night out there, thinking it not something I wanted to touch sans at least some outside confirmation. Not being anybody's best buddy at HRC these days, I didn't think that likely but I'm way fascinated.

I hope it's the fall on the sword explanation as that would mean that HRC actually has a set of balls I'd never have given them credit for.

We investigated the matter, determined that HRC resources had been inappropriately used, and let him go.
I wonder if the inappropriately used resources was the HRC computer system or the e-mails themselves?

While I kind of wish HRC would be able to play that dirty, I doubt if it was a coordinated effort - at least not by the head honchos. I wonder who the staff person is/was.

My oh my. This just gets curiouser and curiouser. So it was a vast left wing conspiracy after all...

AdvanceIndiana is really digging in the mud over this one --- Joe Salmonese of HRC who fired the leaker worked temporarily as a loaned staffer for Julia Carson in her 1996 campaign --- AdvanceIndiana throws out the "idle question" whether he learned any dirty tricks then. Sounds like listening to Jocelyn Tandy has addled his brain. Next it'll be the "black" helicopters directed by Ms. Carson that are after him ...
