By a vote of 55% to 45%, the people of South Dakota got the toughest abortion ban in the country off the books!

South Dakota conservatives would have made abortion in every case, even rape and incest, illegal, except when the mother's life (not health) was in danger. Those who performed abortions or attempted to, would have been charged with a Class 5 felony - up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Thank you Nancy Keenan, President of Planned Parenthood for taking the issue to the people, and ignoring the temptation to take it to the courts. Thank you Nancy for giving the women of South Dakota their voices back. Thank you Nancy for honoring the well-being of rape and incest victims, instead of throwing their choice away. Thank you Nancy for challenging the idea that the South Dakota legislature, 65 men and 11 women, should not be allowed to control the lives, morality, and freedom of those they represent. Thank you Nancy.
