Old activist lyric:
Can we be like drops of water falling on a stone
Splashing, breaking, dispersing in air
Weaker than the stone by far -- but be aware that,
As time goes by, the rock will wear away
I committed that to memory a long, long time ago and, in working in a movement that sometimes doesn't show you the fruits of your efforts until you're a long way down the road from them, that lyric has been both a comfort when the going was hard and an inspiration to keep putting one foot in front of the other, trusting that, with effort, change would come.
