As some of you might have heard, last week was a really rough one for me.
After leading the impromptu protest at the Statehouse, things have turned toward the ugly. While there is a small faction within the LGBT community that doesn't necessarily agree with the protest, a lot of my stress has come from right-wing nuts.
The day after the rally, my phone rang off the hook with folks calling to support me after the brouhaha. However, what is disturbing (since my cell phone number isn't published!) is how many phone calls I got from people telling me I was going to burn in hell, I was a sinner, I should be run out of town, etc.
The politics of personal destruction have begun in earnest and it seems that my family and I are taking the brunt this time.
For example, the window on my car was busted out last night. It was parked on the street since it's the old car that we don't use as much. The car was obviously searched, but nothing was taken - not even the spare change. Footsteps in the snow lead directly up to our car and then back away. No other car on the street was touched - and ours is the ugliest, oldest car parked on the block. The police don't think robbery was the motive, obviously, but instead have asked who we've pissed off lately.
And that's just the stuff that I feel comfortable talking about. I've received several nasty phone calls and "I'll pray for you's," and a busted out window. Folks have said nasty, hateful things about me and worse - my family. But I am not deterred.
We must continue our fight for equality and justice. We can't let anyone intimidate us into doing what they want. As for my family and I, we plan on continuing the fight in any way that we can - whether "authorized" or not - whether it angers some people or not. And I would ask the same of all of you. Don't get consumed by anger and hate. Challenge authority and stand up for your own ideas. And most of all, don't give up the fight.
As a reminder, the next chance to get involved is coming up quick. We will welcome with respect and open arms anyone who is willing to help fight this fight.

I'll see you there. Bring some friends and plan on working.

A couple of weeks ago, that deranged deadbeat and well-known homophobe, Jocelyn Tandy, published my full name, address and phone number on several blogs. That GOP-slated At-Large Candidate Sir Hailstone a.k.a. Mike Jezierski, offered a bounty of $250 for dirt on Jen Wagner, blogmistress of TakingDownWords. Somebody has set up a fake blog using my fullname and is widely soliciting folk to post defamatory material on it. IndyErnie, aka The IndyChicken, has posted repeatedly false accusations about me being busted in the mens room at Eastgate.
The crazies are definitely out there!

Yuck. Can we stop using the phrase "politics of personal destruction," already?
