Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, has been having a hissy fit over Shake's new job. Welcome to the wonderful world of presidential politics, my friend.

Right after the Edwards campaign announced they had hired Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan (who we know and love as Shakespeare's Sister!) - both prominent liberal bloggers - Donohue started squealing like a stuck pig for Edwards to fire the two. The story has now even hit the New York Times. What's his beef? Let's let him speak for himself:

"John Edwards is a decent man who has had his campaign tarnished by two anti-Catholic vulgar trash-talking bigots."

So now that we've seen his rock, let's look at his big glass house, shall we?

"The gay community has yet to apologize to straight people for all the damage that they have done." [MSNBC's Scarborough Country, 4/11/05]

"We've already won. Who really cares what Hollywood thinks? All these hacks come out there. Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It's not a secret, OK? And I'm not afraid to say it. ... Hollywood likes anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes. I like families. I like children. They like abortions. I believe in traditional values and restraint. They believe in libertinism. We have nothing in common. But you know what? The culture war has been ongoing for a long time. Their side has lost." "I'm saying if a Catholic votes for Kerry because they support him on abortion rights, that is to cooperate in evil." [MSNBC's Hardball, 10/21/04]

"Well, look, there are people in Hollywood, not all of them, but there are some people who are nothing more than harlots. They will do anything for the buck. They wouldn't care. If you asked them to sodomize their own mother in a movie, they would do so, and they would do it with a smile on their face." [MSNBC's Scarborough Country, 2/9/06]

I don't think I need to go on. This is just another case of right-wing hypocrisy. They can dish it out, but can't take it. When a couple of uppity-wimen dare to speak their minds, by God, someone has to stand up for the fine American tradition of smacking her down to size. What an asshole. Still, rumor has it that Melissa might lose that new job...

Message to Edwards: Fire her and there's no way I'll ever vote for you. If you're too weak to stand up to this pompous jackass, then there's no way I'd trust you to face down a terrorist with a bomb.

UPDATE: Salon.com is reporting that the two women have lost their jobs.
