Tomorrow, Monday, at 1:00 pm, the glbt citizens of Indiana and our allies will Rally at the Statehouse in the North Rotunda against a right wing attack on the fundamental Constitutional guarantee that all citizens have to equal protection of the laws, a guarantee for which our own parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and great great grandparents in many instances fought. People have given their lives... are giving their lives today... for far less than the important Constitutional principles we represent tomorrow.
In 2005, we rallied outdoors while Eric Miller and Advance America, and Micah Clark of the American Family Association of Indiana, rallied their contempt for us indoors. It seemed as though we had no real public support in our position that this Amendment desecrates the Constitution, insults us as citizens, and is driven by an intolerance that is unseemly and un-Hoosier.
In 2006, we rallied indoors, in the face of a House and Senate dominated by the intolerance of the right wing of the Republican Party, but still with little sense of any public sympathy for our position.
Now in 2007 we rally indoors again.. with a Republican Senate surging rightward, but a House delivered to the same Democratic leadership who in 2004 refused this amendment a vote. We rally with strong statements of support from the Editorial boards of Indiana's leading Newspapers, Republican and Democrat alike. And we rally not only against the disgrace that is this Amendment, but in support of a comprehensive hate crime bill proceeding with bi-partisan support where once there was little, and in favor of civil rights legislation in our favor.
This House Democratic leadership took a bullet for us in 2004 when we were weak. In 2007 we are stronger. Tomorrow it is important that you commit yourself to going to our Statehouse and there at 1:00 to stake a public claim to the guarantees the Constitution today offers all, so that they will not so easily be stolen from us. It is the responsibility of every one of us tomorrow to rally.
