Word on the streets is that Fred Phelps and his "church" will be coming to Lafayette tomorrow to protest outside the funeral of Army Spc Cody Putman who was killed in Iraq. These kooks think that the deaths of American service members should be celebrated as a sign of God's punishment of the country for it's growing acceptance of gays and lesbians.
A counter-protest is being planned, so if you've got the time feel free to stop by and help block the venom these twisted SOB's are spewing when the family is grieving. Remember though, that this is - first and foremost - a private funeral and deserves dignity and respect (something that the Phelps cult refuses to show). If you do attend, keep your wits about you and don't do or say anything outrageous or offensive. Remember, one of the primary ways these people make the money to finance these disgusting operations is by suing any counter-protestor that touches them!
The funeral will be held at Soller-Baker Funeral Home at 9:15am tomorrow. The funeral home is located at 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, Indiana.
[UPDATE:] Thanks to reader John M for the update posted to the Lafayette Journal Courier website. The Phelps clan has decided to stay home. Cuz, you know, sometimes it's hard to get out of bed that early just to spread hate. I mean, how much coffee does that take anyhow? Thanks John!

The Journal and Courier (Lafayette newspaper) released tonight that the picket has been canceled by Westboro Baptist Church. The bigots are staying home, folks, the family and friends can now grieve in peace.

The protest was called off. They do this just to get the publicity without having to go to jail.

The C&J article didn't provide a reason for them canceling the protest, and their website doesn't say anything about it being canceled. They still have it up on their schedule of up-coming protests.
I'm going to venture a guess and say that they canceled it for lame reasons instead of getting something cool, like time on the Mike Gallagher Show, so they don't want anyone to know about it.
Also, their press release on the protest implies that they think that they're prophets. Is that technically blasphemy? Or at least taking the Lord's name in vain?
