Advance Indiana has reported a last minute attempt earlier this week by State Representative Ralph Foley (R-Martinsville) to blast SJR-7 out of the House Rules and Legislative Policy Committee and under a suspension of the rules get it to the floor of the House for a third reading vote before adjournment next Sunday. You'll recall that a few weeks ago the measure failed to pass the committee as the result of a 5-5 tie. The move didn't work, but could be attempted again. As long as the five courageous Democrats who voted against the measure hold fast, the proposed amendement should stay dead for this session.
Yesterday the American Family Association put out an E-Mail "Action Alert" urging recipients to contact their Indiana legislators and urge them to bring back and vote on what they term the "Marriage Protection Amendment". (I note that the message comes from Tupelo, Mississippi. There must be a secret Indiana House district down there.) And, oh yes, they're asking for money to carry on their fight. I'm not currently able to link to or reproduce their message here, but if you aren't familiar with the kind of stuff they spew forth daily to try and make life miserable for the LGBT community, here's the AFA's home page.
It's pretty obvious that the supporters of SJR-7 are not going to go quietly into the sunset. While we can rightly celebrate the acomplishment of having defeated the measure this session, we have to keep our eyes on the next half of the session in January 2008 and if necessary beyond. Continued monetary and volunteer support for such organizations as Indiana Equality are absolutely essential.
