The religious right has launched a massive blitz to derail the federal hate crimes bill and you need to help stop it in it's track. From an HRC press release this afternoon:
As the U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote tomorrow (Thursday) on H.R. 1592, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, anti-gay extremist organizations have embarked on a desperate last attempt to derail passage of the bill. Marking a new low in politics, these groups have embraced the work of a known white-supremacist filmmaker, callously invoked the Virginia Tech massacre, blatantly lied about the congressional record and even used the name and image of Jesus Christ in vain.In recent weeks, religious right leaders have been caught outright lying about the hate crimes bill: claiming that no federal hate crimes law yet exists (it does, has for 40 years and already includes them (i.e., people of faith)) and that the proposed amendment to the hate crimes law would criminalize hate speech (it does not). Some of these same leaders have also been caught disseminating the anti-gay works of a white-supremacist filmmaker. And just last week, the head of the Family Research Council invoked the Virginia Tech victims to argue against the hate crimes bill.
Click here to see who your legislator is and call them NOW. Several of the newly elected Democrats are starting to waver as the calls from fundies keep pouring in. While several of our readers are from the Indianapolis area and count on Julia Carson's ongoing support, those of you from outside of the capital need to pick up the phone immediately. Three of Indiana's newest legislators are newbies from rather conservative districts...
And if you need a case from Indiana to refer to, I'd highly suggest you read the court documents posted today at the Crothersville Times. They recount the details of the April 12th murder of Aaron Hall over perceived sexuality. (clips after the jump)
If our state legislators can't get their act together long enough to protect us from hate (Only five states don't have a hate crimes law!), then let's take it up a level. Find out who your legislator is and call now!

Rep. Carson and Sen. Bayh are original co-sponsors (meaning they agreed to vote yes and have their names attached to the bill prior to its introduction) before it was brought back this session. Sen. Lugar and the 8 other IN Reps have not announced their votes yet. THEY need called.
The bill does NOT punish speech, it punishes acting violently. Quoting specifically from HR 1592 this bill adds protections from these acts against these groups: "...willfully causes bodily injury to any person or, through the use of fire, a firearm, or an explosive or incendiary device, attempts to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability of any person."
That's it. That's all it does. No thoughts are punished. Religion has been protected, as has race, creed, and color since 1969. But what it does do is huge and the fundies are fighting it w/ lies and hysterics because the GLBT community would be protected under federal law.
Call Sen. Lugar. Call central IN Reps. Souder, Buyer, Burton, & Pence. Demand they vote yes for this important legislation.
