Upon which Russia and Germany are banned entirely

THIS ENTRY WILL STAY AT THE TOP ALL WEEKEND

If things get a little crazy around here this holiday weekend, it's for good reason. We've been under attack lately at the server level by spammers - a denial of service attack. Fortunately, they haven't been strong enough to take us down yet, but we've been limping along like a wounded antelope the past couple days. We've shut down all trackbacks already and may end up shutting down comments if things don't mellow out.

Some of you may not know that when my good friend and cohort Melissa McEwan launched Shakesville recently, Jerame (and good friend of the Indy LGBT community, Jeff Newman) hosted it on their server. Melissa's site has been under attack from the beginning. She's having to move off of the server (Which depresses Jerame and I since she's a very good friend and we hate losing her in the neighborhood!) and has already shut down both trackbacks and comments. While Shakes was the intended target, we both use the same blog software and we've gotten caught in the crosshairs.

To help alleviate some of the bandwidth problems and costs (I think Jeff and Jerame's bill for the server this month is floating around $1000 extra!), they've had to start banning thousands upon thousands of IP addresses. This morning it became so bad that the entire countries of Russia and Germany were banned. Now, Brazil and Italy have taken over. Banks of computers are sending us millions upon millions of requests to leave SPAM comments and trackbacks advertising everything from porn to pills.

If you end up being banned from the site - please shoot me an e-mail at this address, so we can correct it. By this point, don't be surprised if we lose the comments feature for a while either. We fully expect the problem to be fixed by Monday, but just in case the site doesn't load for you or something is screwy this weekend at least you know why...

Thanks for supporting us and, please, no advertising sex toys in the comments section...

Block all of Romania too. You guys might want to consider a Honeypot as well.

Good luck.

No sex toys, huh? How about fruit, used as....never mind.

Here's to cyber remedies.

Damn Romanians. *grumbles*

The Germans and Russians have always been attacking us with low level SPAM attacks, but this has taken things to a new level. I just feel so bad for Shakes. :(

I am so pissed! No info on new sex toys via Bilerico, and now my holiday weekend is ruined!

You guys have no room to complain about a "denial of service"!!! ... Ain't that the pot calling the kettle beige!

Well, be sure to apply all the latest security patches ... I'm also jealous, because I know that there is nothing more fun than obscure operating systems software maintenance!

... and always put on your electronic rubbers ... Remember, it's a jungle out there ...

Let me assure you, Allen, there won't be a single denial of service coming out of this corner.... :)

Oh, wait, I said too much in public.

Don't worry, Alex ... I accept your apology.
