Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church, was formally charged today. From the Wichita Eagle:
Shirley Phelps-Roper, 49, of Topeka, was charged with negligent child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, flag mutilation and disturbing the peace.
All this because she let her 10-year-old son stand on an American flag. Is it just me, or did the government not care when this group was protesting AIDS victims' funerals but does now that they're protesting military funerals?
Just seems to me that the WBC is one of the few right-leaning groups that doesn't contradict itself with that whole "America is going down the sewer with its decadent ways" rhetoric followed by "America is the greatest country on Earth and no one can say anything bad about it ever." That's one of the reasons that I like them a bit more than The 700 Club or NARTH style fundies.
The ACLU indicates that they will probably represent her in court.

Now THAT is the best part of this whole story, isn't it? After all of the times that the Phelps clan has called the ACLU godless heathen bastard Jews and other assorted lovely names, I doubt their Christian morals are going to stop them from accepting the ACLU's help.
And, yes, Alex. The Phelps klan are equal opportunity bigots and haters.

I can't recall where I read this, I think it was at Pam's House Blend, but I could be wrong. It seems Fred (and some of his "congregation") are lawyers. The way they fund their jaunts to and fro to protest this and that is by suing those folks they inflame to the point of battery against them and winning.
I can't be certain, but I imagine that this is the WBC's wet dream come true. Think of all the publicity they will get from this one!
