What a long strange trip this has been, eh? Today is bilerico.com's 3rd birthday! Three years ago today, bilerico.com went from being my personal webpage and started its next life as a blog. 3,940 posts later, here we are...
When I started the blog, it was just me out here blogging for no one. I quickly realized that blogging every day was hard work and I'd never been very good at even keeping a diary! I asked Jerame to come on board and blog with me. That's when I learned he wasn't good at daily posts either. *grins* Six months later, I started inviting the various leaders in the Indiana LGBT community to come on board and start blogging on bilerico. (Current contributor Marla Stevens was one of the first to join us - in April 2005. Her post on paying taxes as a lesbian married couple is still one of our most popular thru search engines.) Several people accepted over the next couple of years and as someone dropped off another would want to start. And our traffic just kept increasing! It wasn't that long before the number of contributors and traffic required me to find a helper in managing the blog.
And so Alex joined us and was quickly promoted to content editor. (And let me tell you, especially now I appreciate his help even more!) Together, Jerame, Alex and I dreamed up the next stage for bilerico.com - The Bilerico Project. As Jerame rebuilt the site with our new look, Alex and I got busy lining up the great talent we have on the site today. We hand picked the folks we thought would add something valuable to the discussions that our community needs to have. And we've been more successful than we could have imagined.
So thanks to everyone out there reading our blog. Thanks for making us one of Indiana's most politically influential blogs and one of the fastest growing LGBT blogs in the nation. Thanks for encouraging us. Thanks for interacting with us, talking about us and spreading the word about the site. We couldn't have done it without our contributors and our readers. And I'm very grateful for all of you.
The first post on bilerico.com was a quote from Margaret Meade. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." We're working diligently on our part of the web. Thanks for joining us through the years. Together, we will change the world.
