What Does George Bush Have Against Gay Kids?

That's the question that popped into my head on watching the new abstinence until marriage propaganda piece from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Yeah, gay kids should tell their parents to tell them to wait to have sex until their married. Oh, wait same-sex couples can only marry in Massachusetts, but not the 49 other states. And the only reason same-sex couples can marry in Massachusetts is because President Bush's attempt to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning gay marriage failed.

But, then of course, data from a study commissioned by HHS has come out saying that abstinence only programs have failed despite the flood of cash thrown at them by the Bush administration.

From RH Reality Check:

“After 10 years and $1.5 billion in public funds these failed abstinence-only-until-marriage programs will go down as an ideological boondoggle of historic proportions,” said James Wagoner, President of Advocates for Youth.

“The tragedy is not simply the waste of taxpayer dollars, it is the damage done to the young people who have been on the receiving end of distorted, inaccurate information about condoms and birth control. We have been promoting ignorance in the era of AIDS, and that’s not just bad public health policy, its bad ethics”.

Much love: Think Progress

That's been a good question since the Reagan era when bigots in government made calculated decisions to underfund research and education and religious bigots like Robertson and Falwell publicly gloated about our dead.

In the intervening decades we’ve had to lead the fight for education with the help of the medical community but our efforts are still stymied by politicians and cult leaders who don't appear to care if we live or die.

We need a study to estimate how many of the 25,000,000 deaths due to AIDS were caused initially by reliance on cult programs like abstinence. I’m sure the figures are far worse in areas of Africa and Russia where the disease is pandemic. Just a week or so ago the roman cult archbishop of Mozambique Chimoio said that condoms have holes in them and that condoms and antivirals were deliberately infected with HIV disease. He then advocated abstinence. 16% of Mozambique’s people are already infected – how many more will die because of this criminally reckless monster? And how many will die because of Bush?

Thankfully, Jenna has wised up and figured out abstinence-only campaigns don't work.
