"I had sex with Larry Craig" guy wants to keep his vanity plate

David Phillips, more famous now for saying he had sex with Larry Craig, is in a battle to keep his vanity plate that says "poofter". From the Washington Post:
It's always a rolling good laugh for them," says Phillips, who is gay and chose his tags' message because "it's just an amusing word that I self-identify with."
The commonwealth of Virginia is not amused. It gave Phillips his vanity plates in error, Carolyn Easley, coordinator of the special license plates office, wrote in a recent letter. "You may have grown fond of your personalized plates," but they are "socially, racially or ethnically offensive or disparaging" and "you must return them." There was no explanation for why it took Virginia 11 years to figure out what "poofter" means.
Aw, let the boy keep his plates. No homophobe would get a license plate that says "poofter"... unless homophobia's not the reason it's "offensive". (Via Towleroad)

HILARIOUS that Virginia would claim to stand against anti-gay defamation! ROFLMAO!
Why don't they change all those laws that actively discriminate against ALL LGBTQ people, poofter-identified or not!

Seriously, Nick, I'd like to know what you know and what makes you say that.
On first blush there are a lot of signs in the story that scream to me "I'm just looking for attention". That doesn't mean that I'm right.
And totes Dustin. If their thing is that it's homophobic, they really don't have any place to talk. But I wonder if the problem is that the thing mentions the gays at all. My brother's work won't let him vote for Bilerico b/c the word "gay" appears on the voting page (gay patriot, average gay joe). So... there we go!

Hey, let him keep the plates ... any guy who would have sex with Larry Craig can't have very good taste in the first place, right?
(In California, a famous gay rumor was that, in the course of normal incrementing of the numbers on the non-personalized plates, the California BMV issued "2BIG469" --- and the plates happened to go to a gay couple living in West Hollywood.)

A.J. -- it was years ago and he was young. Cut him some slack.
Alex -- Like Nick, I've crossed paths with him -- and know first hand that he's got a reputation among the D.C. Eagle regulars as a credible, mature sort not given to attention seeking.
