Gay Louisiana GOP Lawmaker Jim McCrery to Retire:
Louisiana Rep. Jim McCrery, senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, told associates Friday he intends to retire rather than seek re-election in 2008. McCrery, 58, joins 17 other Republicans who are headed into voluntary retirement as the party struggles to adjust to its return to minority status in the 2006 elections.
Yup, he's gay. I wonder if he knew he was leaving when he cast the vote in favor of ENDA?

Why is it always the Republicans? Every. Single. Time.

It's hard being a minority, especially when the majority would use any chance it gets to demonize you. Fortunately, many people of McCrery's persuasion have stood up to that majority in ways that prove that its power is not absolute and the minority can express itself fully even in the context of relative disempowerment.
But at some point you tire of being the one pushing against power. There's really no shame in that... except that the Republicans are going to have to fill another non-incumbant's seat.
(and I meant "seat" in the gay way)
