More information is coming out about what Andrew Sullivan calls the "rancid homophobia" of Republican Mike Huckabee. In a 1992 senate race Huckabee when asked about allowing openly gay Americans to serve in the military said:
I believe to try to legitimize that which is inherently illegitimate would be a disgraceful act of government. I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk.
Wow Mike! Tell us how much you really hate The Gays.
This revelation comes on the heels of Huckabee defending his statement about quarantining people living with HIV, Huckabee saying homosexuality is a sin and saying that gay marriage is a threat to civilization.
No wonder Huckabee has become the preferred candidate of the evangelical right-wing. He takes the hard-edged homophobia of George Bush, cranks it up a few notches and wraps it all in a nice folksy demeanor. And the traditional media is eating it up.
Huckabee is portrayed as a genteel Southern pastor who plays the guitar, lost over 100 pounds and is considered smart and funny. So he thinks that LGBT people are a dangerous public health risk and that people living with HIV should be quarantined? Whatever.
Huckabee is now surging in the polls as the campaigns of Rudy Guiliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney falter with weeks before the early state primaries. He is the one that the right-wing conservatives who wish to turn America into a theocracy have been waiting for. He shares their views against homosexuality, a woman's right to choose, against social programs to help the working class and he is adept at using language that expresses those views without seeming like the extremist that he is.
Make no mistake. It is Huckabee who is a "public health risk" to the lives of LGBT Americans.

I can't help but laugh and think of today's You Gotta See This video. Apparently I'm not the only one sitting out here and thinking "No way. Huckabee? Fuck me!"
