"In April of last year, Gov. Lynch and the state of New Hampshire passed a bill officially recognizing civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. This courageous act showed us that the idea of America – fairness, justice and equal opportunity – can become a reality when we have the courage to stand up for what is right."
-- Presidential candidate John Edwards about New Hampshire's new civil unions law in a press release

What is right, John Edwards, is full human rights, including marriage, as all that goes with it for LGBT Americans.
That said, I am warming to Senator Edwards, and he has gone to great pains to appear teachable. But he has a lot to learn on our issues, and I suspect his former discomfort with being around gays, as mentioned on the LOGO debate, and deep southern origins may have laid in a deep vein of heterodoxy.
Still I think he is a decent guy who really understands that there is a class war being waged on working people in this country.
