Hmm, I think that is a bit harsh honestly.
That a soap would feature gay characters is pretty amazing, that it would populate it with enough of them so they can bed hop, well that would be a bit much, even nowadays.
The core audience of the show would probably not be interested in such shenanegans, and it is possible that the soap would lose both audience and sponsors, if they showed gay men in an even more threatening light.
