If you read my blog or the posts I have done on Bilerico so far, you'll note that when I'm describing the African-American GLBT community, I will sometimes use the term 'SGL' or 'SGL community''

What's SGL and what does it mean? I'll tell 'ya after the jump.

SGL stands for Same Gender Loving:

Many African-American GLBT peeps hate the term 'queer' that some peeps use to describe this community, and the 2000 Black Pride Survey confirms that .

The term "Same Gender Loving" (SGL) was created by activist Cleo Manago in the early 1990's The intent was not only creating an alternative to the 'Q' word, but create a term which spoke more directly to the realities of Black women who love women and Black men who love men and connect us with our culture.

While it's not in widespread use yet, there's a sizable enough portion of our community that embraces it in order for me to interchangably use it when I'm writing specifically about African-American GLBT people.
