The current session of the Indiana General Assembly adjourned today, and that means that SJR7, the so-called "Marriage Protection Amendment" (many prefer "Marriage Discrimination Amendment") to the Indiana Constitution is finished. Good Riddance!

I'll be posting a few thoughts concerning the slain constitutional monstrosity in the next few days. SJR7 is indeed dead.....but the issue is almost certainly not. The proponents are likely not to give up.

But for now, the awful thought that this confusing and harmful measure could have been on the November 2008 ballot can be banished. The earliest date anything comparable can now come before the voters would be November 2012. Thanks to the many people, visible and behind the scenes, who have helped make this historic day in Indiana GLBT history a reality!

Does this mean I can officially say that SJR-7 is dead now? *grins*

Bil, you know me and my penchant for legal preciseness. (And I know your penchant for saying "That's what I said a long time ago" (: )

To paraphrase the first would-be male presidental First Spouse: "It all depends on the meaning of the word 'dead' ". I suppose, despite the fact that Governor Daniels has said he's satisfied with what the session did on the property tax issue, the could come some unforseen need to call a special session, and hence the slim possibility for mischief. But the odds of that or resurrection of SJR7 are Far less than Elliott Spitzer being named the Democrat's Vice Presidential nominee this (or any future) year.

So dead is dead is dead is really, really, really dead as far as I'm concerned.
