It is no secret that the path to GLBT civil rights runs through the halls of legislative bodies at the local, state and national levels. Elected officials say yea or nay to legislation that allows us to adopt children, visit our partners in the hospital, serve in the military and be open and honest without fear of being fired from our jobs.

The vast majority of elected officials are heterosexual and that makes the crucial mission of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund all the more important.

The Victory Fund is the only national organization focused on increasing the number of GLBT people in elected office.

As Victory Fund president and Bilerico contributor Chuck Wolfe says:

This is the path to change. We are not content to sit on the sidelines and hope that others do the right thing for our community. We will step up and lead the fight for a more equal and fair America, and we will win.

The Victory Fund's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Institute is partnering with the Democratic National Committee and the National Black Justice Coalition on a first ever Candidate & Campaign Training for candidates of color.

The training will be held April 23-26 in Baltimore, MD and will coincide with NBJC's national conference. At the training participants will learn the skills needed to run an effective campaign for public office so that they can join GLBT leaders of color like Joe Angelo, city commissioner in Wilton Manors, FL, Kecia Cunningham, city council member in Decatur, GA and Dana Rone, school board member in Newark, NJ.

Visit the Gay and Lesbian Leadership Institute website to apply to be a part of this historic training. In partnership with the DNC, the Victory Fund is offering 10 scholarships for qualified candidates. For more information on applying for a scholarship or to recommend someone else, please contact Lauren Peters at lauren.peters@glli.org.

Michael, you need to go to that. So does Monica Roberts. I'd vote for either of you.

Thanks Monica. I am actually going to be one of the trainers.

The Victory Fund has assembled a fantastic group of trainers. If you know of anyone that would be good to participate in the training, please pass the info along to them.

Maybe we need to take up a collection to get Monica Roberts out there for this. I know of several African Americans here in GA who would be perfect. When you see Kecia Cunningham, give her a hug for me.

Monica

There are scholarships available! So no need to take up a collection.

I was wondering the same thing, Monica. Any chance of a scholarship to send Monica Roberts if she could attend? (We don't know if she could obviously.)

I'd love to go, but the first two days of the training overlap with my work schedule.
