Actually, Patrick didn't win an award. She won a race. She is the first woman driver to win an IndyCar race.
Some media have said she is the first female driver ever to win a motorsports race. Not true. A number of women have won races in other areas of motorsport, like sprint cars, late models, dragsters, etc. The IndyCar series has been tough to crack, and Danica had placed as high as 4th in the Indy 500. After 50 starts, she finally won in the Japan 500.
The toughest nut to crack has been stock cars, in NASCAR. As yet, no woman has ever won anything in the NASCAR national series. Several women are poised to try, including Chrissy Wallace and Erin Crocker.

Go Danica Patrick! I remember how last year in Indiana her face was plastered all over everything selling who knows what!
It's a feminist victory!

What can I say - I'm from Indy. I always root for the female driver when there is one. Underdog and whatnot.
