It seems
Tori Spelling has reached the level of Madonna, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Joan Crawford, and all of the other divas in gay mythology and no one bothered to tell us!
In an interview with Reuters, Spelling anointed herself a gay icon:
I'm a huge fan of gays. They love me; I love them. They consider me kind of a gay icon, which they've labeled me as.
I was at the last National Gay Convention and never once did we take the vote to label her as a gay icon.
Sure, she was in some lifetime movies, a few gay films, and has a little dog she likes to dress up. She's had plastic surgery, some major family feuds, and a quickie wedding. She was a child star and on 90210. She was a Pussycat Doll and has a reality show...
That hardly qualifies her for diva status.
Nice try, Ms. Spelling, but it's not yet your time to be an icon. Go to rehab a few times. Become a huge star, have a tragic downfall, then stage a major comeback. Adopt a few kids from other countries. Get arrested and spend 2 hours in jail while shooting a great mugshot.
Then we'll talk.

Oh, Waymon, I think you're being a little harsh. After all, wikipedia, which only presents information that must be verifiably true and commonly agreed upon, lists Katherine Heigl, Ellen Pompeo, Justin Timberlake and Superman as gay icons. (source)
However, if we're opening up the floor for formal nominations, I think Glenn Close, Mary Louise Parker, and Wonder Woman are overdue for consideration.

Superman? Really? I mean, maybe the Dean Cain version...
And I second the motion for Mary Louise Parker! Love her!
I think Wonder Woman was sworn in YEARS ago. I mean, I was her for halloween when I was 6 years old... Wait, that's probably no surprise to anyone...

Don't all gay icons have chickens on their back, jer? I thought was as good as having your official queer card!
And Wonder Woman? Hell yes. I got in trouble when I was 4 or 5 for wearing Wonder Woman underoos out into the yard. I'd made myself duct tape bracelets and I was outside twirling and twirling and riding my invisible jet all around the weeping willow tree.

Maybe the chicken is trying to hatch her career...

I've always been more of a Superman kind of guy myself. Although Batman certainly had his moments looking after his "ward."

I have always been a Superman kind of guy myself. One cannot miss the appeal of batman looking after his "ward" Robin. I'll bet that lucky redbreast got to spit shine Batman's boots...

Too harsh. She's DEFINITELY a gay icon, especially after TRICK and So NoTORIous (which showed how pro-gay her "life" is). Now there's KISS THE BRIDE (which I saw too days ago...and kinda sucks, although Tori is good!)

Incidentally, she calls herself an "icon" (which I think she is--see above). You're the one calling her a "diva" like Cher or Madonna, not her.
(Why am I defending Tori all of a sudden?! I dunno, I honestly think she's has something. I loved So NoTORIous.)

Brent, I think you came to your senses in the last comment... LOL.
And I love Tori, which is why I give her a hard time. Maybe she is her way on to "icon" status if we gays can tease her relentlessly and still go see her crappy movies.
I tease, I tease... mostly.
