The
marriage news just keeps on coming. Ellen DeGeneres announced on her show on Friday that she and long-time girlfriend Portia de Rossi plan to wed now that the California Supreme Court has overturned the ban on same-sex marriage.
When the announcement was made, with de Rossi in the audience, it was met with thunderous applause.
This isn't the first time Ellen has used her show to make a statement...
In 1997, she brought her character on the ABC sitcom "Ellen" out of the closet, making the show the first on prime-time network TV to have an openly gay lead.
She has also used her talk show as a platform recently to speak out against antigay violence and bigotry. She issued a tearful statement about the Lawrence King murder, as well as took on Sally Kern over her "gays are worse than terrorist" tirade.
I applaud Ellen for using her platform to spread the word about our community and issues. It makes it that much harder for people to say they "don't know a gay person" when we have someone so visible on TV. Hating a faceless group is always easier. Attaching a human face to a community helps open minds and hearts.
Now I just have to convince Ellen to let me be the flower girl...

Who knows, Waymon; maybe you could convince Ellen and Portia to have a double ceremony with you and Anthony!

The best part was watching all those people erupt in good cheer. :)
