Well, maybe my musings here, here, here, and here last month (which coincidentally began with April Fool's Day) concerning disgraced Idaho Senator Larry Craig being John McCain's running mate this Fall aren't as supportable as the polling now suggests.

What polling? Tuesday when I went to cast my own vote in the Indiana primary elections I decided to do some exit polling of my own concerning LEF, which stands for "Larry's Electability Factor." It wasn't at all pretty.

The first guy I approached had stopped to use the restroom before leaving the building after casting his own ballot. The fact that I had earlier observed no roll of paper in the dispenser may have pre-disposed him. "That creep.....for veep?!?!" he stammered, and hurried on. I called the Gallop folks on how to form questions better.

My next interview was with an older lady with a cane who smiled at me politely as I approached her and said, "Young man [my heart melted], and I'll bet you are going to ask me if I'm one of those senior women who can't wait to see Hillary as the first woman President."

Well, no, I tried to reply......but it was too late. For the next fifteen minutes I heard all about how her mother, her mother's mother, and.....you get the idea......had fought for the right of more than half the population to vote, and how her forbearers would have been proud that she was carrying on tin the same tradition. I was so moved I gave her my flag pin. Since I hadn't seen John McCain wearing one n Fox News, I thought it would be OK. We didn't get around to Larry Craig. I don't know the flag pin protocols in Idaho.

I had heard that the younger generation had a new and different attitude toward things political, so my next target was a somber young man likely just out of college. I asked: "Does the thought of Larry Craig energize the hopes and aspirations of your generation?" I'm not sure how to evaluate "Fuck off, grandpa" in the context of margin of error.

By that time my stomach said it was time for lunch, and my first attempt to emulate the Zogby enterprise didn't seem to be panning out. Three approaches and only one definitive answer. I don't think that would stand up as statistically significant.

My son lives in Oregon and their primary is coming up. I'll bone up on this polling thing and check the flights.
