It's a good thing we always set an extra plate for dinner. In the past week, a masked man made his move, Mercedes sat on the couch and put her feet up, and now we're going to try and squeeze one more person at the table.
Please welcome gay rights activist and American University law professor Nancy D. Polikoff. Nancy is the author of Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage: Valuing All Families Under the Law. Nancy has been working on issues involving lesbian and gay families for more than 30 years and is a member of the National Family Law Advisory Council of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. She was one of the founders of a feminist law collective and she directed family law programs at the Women's Legal Defense Fund. She helped develop the legal theories in support of second-parent adoption and visitation rights for legally unrecognized parents.

A blessing upon your endeavors. Nancy, you are going to love Indianapolis. Be sure to have Bil show you the view from the hilltops.(?) If you are interested in such things do see the Native American Museum downtown. It has a remarkable collection.

Hi Nancy. Have you read Stephanie Coontz's Marriage, A History: From Obedience to Intimacy, or The Social Origins of Private Life: A History of American Families. If so, what do you think of them.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm happy to be part of the Bilerico family. I have read Stephanie Coontz's Marriage, A History and I highly recommend it. Stephanie is a great friend to LGBT family issues and definitely supports the "beyond marriage" approach. I have not read The Social Origins of Private Life, so I can't comment on that, but I also highly recommend another of her books ... The Way We Never Were. I have taught that book in a law school family law seminar, and it is quite the eye opener! It shows that the nostalgia for the 1950s Leave It To Beaver is really nostalgia for...the way things never were!
