How these things happen...

This is not from one article but, rather, a series of articles. It's a perfect illustration of how the radical right will seize on something (anything!) and, with no research, without even reading the readily available facts, make it into an issue to "prove" their rhetoric in some way.

An article appeared yesterday in the paper: Gay Sets U.S. Record in 100 Meter Dash at U.S. Olympic Trials

Tyson Gay set a new U.S. record in the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, beating Maurice Green's nine-year-old mark by .02 seconds.

Gay, the defending world champion in the 100 and 200 meters, covered the distance in 9.77 seconds at the trials in Eugene, Oregon

A "pro family" group titled the AP version of the news on their site: "Homosexual eases into 100 final at Olympic trials"

Note that the Christian Right refuses to use the word "gay". They even changed the runner's name to "Tyson Homosexual" in the body of the article.

... and when Tyson Gay went on the win the final, AFA's OneNewsNow did it again!

Headline: Homosexual wins trials 100 in wind-aided 9.68 seconds

Now back to me - I must admit to similar knee-jerk reactions to headlines, having read a headline the other day and jumping to a conclusion that wasn't intended at all. I read a headline that said "Tiger Woods is OUT!" I laughed at my interpretation, shared my mistake with a few friends, decided I needed to leave my desk and get out in the world a bit and went on with my day.

Too bad whoever picked up this news bit didn't take the time to even read the first line of the article. Too bad that hatred is so strong that it causes this kind of blindness to fact obviously caused by the mere appearance of the word "gay".

I think this is hilarious, and maybe a little scary.

Darn...it looks like they fixed the link.

The thinking behind using "homosexual" instead of "gay" is that "gay" means "happy" and homosexuals won't be very happy when they're burning in hell. I heard this firsthand from my mother, a loyal Focus on the Anus listener.

Ok, now I have fears of someone at the Fed saying "We need Hennessey here" and some concretely minded junior bringing back a bottle of Irish Whiskey and me missing a meeting.

The site in question has an auto-correct mechanism in place to change all instances of "gay" to homosexual in AP news articles as they come in on a feed. They also changes all instances of "Democratic" to "Democrat."

So it wasn't an individual responsible, but a policy they have in place that doesn't quite work.

I knew a Gay family in Evansville. I think their names were Luke and Sheila Gay. And they had some little Gay children too.

That's what I was thinking, Steph....

But that link's to Bloomberg? Bloomberg is doing junk like that? Seriously? I didn't know that they were a religious right operated paper, just a more generally neocon/corporacon publication.

It reminds me when I was growing up in Pittsburgh of a local news broadcaster who on one chilly winter evening gave the headline news with the following quote:

"Emporer Hirohito visits the United States and there's a nip in the air."

I'm not making this up.

You have to admit, it's funny stuff.
