This is not from one article but, rather, a series of articles. It's a perfect illustration of how the radical right will seize on something (anything!) and, with no research, without even reading the readily available facts, make it into an issue to "prove" their rhetoric in some way.
An article appeared yesterday in the paper: Gay Sets U.S. Record in 100 Meter Dash at U.S. Olympic Trials
Tyson Gay set a new U.S. record in the 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, beating Maurice Green's nine-year-old mark by .02 seconds.
Gay, the defending world champion in the 100 and 200 meters, covered the distance in 9.77 seconds at the trials in Eugene, Oregon
A "pro family" group titled the AP version of the news on their site: "Homosexual eases into 100 final at Olympic trials"
Note that the Christian Right refuses to use the word "gay". They even changed the runner's name to "Tyson Homosexual" in the body of the article.
... and when Tyson Gay went on the win the final, AFA's OneNewsNow did it again!
Headline: Homosexual wins trials 100 in wind-aided 9.68 seconds
Now back to me - I must admit to similar knee-jerk reactions to headlines, having read a headline the other day and jumping to a conclusion that wasn't intended at all. I read a headline that said "Tiger Woods is OUT!" I laughed at my interpretation, shared my mistake with a few friends, decided I needed to leave my desk and get out in the world a bit and went on with my day.
Too bad whoever picked up this news bit didn't take the time to even read the first line of the article. Too bad that hatred is so strong that it causes this kind of blindness to fact obviously caused by the mere appearance of the word "gay".
