They do have a knack for consistency, the Phelpsians: they hate just about everyone.
Yes, today they're marchin' on former White House press secretary Tony Snow's funeral. The problem with him is that Bush signed a law banning funeral protests and Snow didn't quit. That makes him a "heretical scribe."
For all the demonization of the WBC that goes on out there, they end up proving themselves useful to the right because they can say, "Hey, we're not that bad of homophobes. Just look at those guys!" I personally think that they're better than the Dobsons of the world - they're the awkward, unpolished, non-media-genic logical extension of the more powerful Religious Righters. They keep it consistent and honest.

Thereby being a party to the crime of passing laws to make the preaching of the gospel to this adulterous and sinful generation = criminal activity. That is a very bad monkey! Gawd this guy is such a deuche bag! One of the most moving parts of "The Laramie Project" is when Christina Ricci comes out in her little angel costume and they all block Phelps' protest outside of the courthouse where Matthew Sheppard's killers were being tried. I cry every time.

I don't think they hate soldiers or Tony Snow at all - it's just a particularly effective strategy change for them.
Protesting gay events wasn't getting them any coverage because gay people ignored them, made fun of them and effectively countered what they did.
But attacking right-wing targets and implying they're somehow supporting the gayz does the same thing as that stupid cage match - brings out the homophobia in the people they're protesting.
Like the jocks in high school who would keep their friends in line or initiate new clique members by accusing them of being gay - the friends would go out of their way to say "No! I'm not! See, I'll beat the crap out of this gay kid to prove it!"

Speaking of protests and homophobes, just a reminder: The homophobic reggae Straight Pride march is still on for Aug. 31 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY. Never too soon for activists to start planning the counter-protests.

I wonder why the "good" Christians don't speak out against this trashy preacher? And yes Alex, you are absolutely right, nobody gives a damn about his hate for us, it's all about the soldiers.
I fully supported the Million Fag March that decided to protest Phelps this past March 30.

Fred Phelps is a worthless piece of sh*t! Just google his name and anyone can see how awful this man is, from punching his own baby in the face because it was crying in the middle of his sermon to telling his congregation that it is acceptable for husbands to beat up their wives if they don't do what the husband commands.
Leslie, I agree with you that other Christians need to speak out against wannabe-Rev. Phelps, rather than just stating that he, and his church, is not recognized by the Baptist church. In fact, his "church" of about 100 are about 90% made up of his brainwashed family.
I also think it's interesting that Phelps used to donate money to the Republican party until they spoke out about him, at which time he started his "hate campaign" against them and the government.

Yeah, but then you have the Dobson's and LaBarbarera's "speaking out" against PhelpsCo while doing the same damn thing only quieter and more media savvy. They have more money and media savvy.
But this part gets me:
Didn't Phelps and Company protest the Pope when he was here for being "filthy, sodomite whores?"
