Happy 4th of July! It's America's birthday and time for cookouts, fireworks and a day off from work. 
When I appeared on the John Selig Outspoken podcast, one of the things we talked about was Indiana's corn crop and how the recent flooding had devastated the fields.
"Knee high by the 4th of July" is the old farmer's saying about corn plants and, at least in some parts, the crop is doing okay. This picture of me in the corn field shows you at least some of the corn has made it although more didn't survive than did. This quick cell phone snapshot was taken in front of Jerame's brother's house yesterday.

Open thread: Remember Patricia Nell Warren's post month or two ago about an Indiana bill that would charge bookstores a $250 licensing fee to sell books that had topics of a sexual nature?
The bill did pass, and I saw on the TV in just the last few days that the ACLU and several bookstore owners have been successful at getting this Indiana law declared unconstitutional --- Well, duh!
The Indiana Attorney General said he is not going to bother appealing, since he doesn't see any realistic chance of getting the ruling overturned.

The racist and homophobic vitriolic rhetoric are what got Senator Helms elected to Congress for 30 years, and there are still some who spew these same ideas even today.
His message of hatred, intolerance and bigotry appealed to a generation when it was acceptable. Having grown up in a northern state, it was a jarring experience for me to see "Whites only," or "Colored only" signs on public facilities in my first trip to the South in the 1950's.
I was a tiny part of the civil rights movement of the 1960's, and know that it took way too long for the African American to get his God-given rights. The struggle, unfortunaely continues for equality for all of us.
I would suggest there are some reading this in their quite, peaceful home hoping that someone would get busy and do something to change things. They are sitting on the sidelines hoping for change. Change won't happen because we wish it would; it will happen because we make it happen. We have an opportunity in the coming months to elect new leaders. I'm hoping all of us get fully involved in this process.
We can elect candidates who espouse the ideas of Senator Helms or we can elect a candidate with the hope and vision of Senator Obama. Whose ideas do you prefer?
Then, please help to make it happen.

Neither will I. I have sympathy for his family, but that's as far as it goes for the han that helped kill in concert with Janice Raymond Medicaid coverage for transgender medicine.
