Here's the best reason to watch MSNBC.
Just in time for the closing rush of the presidential election, MSNBC is shaking up its prime-time programming lineup, removing the long-time host -- and one-time general manager of the network -- Dan Abrams from his 9 p.m. program and replacing him with Rachel Maddow, who has emerged as a favored political commentator for the all-news cable channel.
The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams's last program on Thursday. After MSNBC's extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8.
Congratulations, Rachel! In addition to being one of the smartest, wittiest and most well-informed news commentators on the air, Rachel Maddow may now have the distinction of being the highest-placed, out lesbian in the news business. (Am I wrong?)
If anyone can make the mainstream media worth watching, it's Maddow! (And farewell to Dan Abrams. I'm sorry this promotion has been at his expense.)

Here, here! Rachel rocks! Her radio show is on too damned early in the morning for me to listen to, but I'll be catching this one for sure! Too bad they won't let her dress as butch as she does in her print and radio promo shots, tho. That would be major cool.

Rebecca, I agree: the higher she climbs in the corporate media world, the femmy they make her appear!! But she doesn't compromise her message!

As an avid XM radio user who listens to the XM version of "Air America", I've enjoyed Maddow's perspective for some time now. She used to comment often on radio about how she hated the makeup and hairstyling but loved the chance to speak seriously on politics on a widely viewed outlet. She's very, very good at it.

I'm a HUGE Rachel fan. She's an enormously talented broadcaster and a fine political analyst.
I think Brynn is correct about her position as an out lesbian in TV news. The first time she substituted for Olbermann, I thought it was the first time a national news broadcast was anchored by an out gay person.
I do have a beef, though, when she's referred to as Ms. Maddow in press references. She's earned a Ph.D., and should be properly titled Dr. Maddow. My observation is that women who should be called Dr. are often not accorded that title; but that men who have it usually are.
BTW, there's a collection of Rachel e-cards that's been made available on line by fans.

Rory, I absolutely agree with you about the "Dr" title. Good point!
Can you provide a link for the e-cards?
