In case you hadn't noticed, Bill Maher is coming to the Murat this weekend. Now, I suppose, in some corners, Bill Maher causes quite a bit of excitement. As America's preeminent libertine comedian, this is quite understandable. And, I'll admit, Maher can be quite hilarious.

That said, I tire of him shitting on religious people constantly. I would find his skewering of religious "ignorance" and "superstition" more credible if he didn't possess his own set of... errr... goofy "faith based" beliefs -- in particular, the profoundly stupid belief that vaccines are a grand hoax and responsible for a number of health problems. The belief that god created the Earth 5,000 years ago seems quite implausible to me and, indeed, may be related to a number of invidious political initiatives, but it seems less directly harmful than using your national television show to promote the idea that vaccinating your children is the same thing as injecting them with poison. The former may damage the scientific world-view in some vague sense, but the latter will actually get people sick and kill them. Oy.

On a side note, I'm frequently shocked by the number of people who deride religious beliefs as idiotic mumbo-jumbo, but, in the next breath, want to tell me all about ghosts, healing crystals, and my horoscope. I'm not saying your an idiot if you believe in any of those things. But I think even an ounce of self-criticism would make you realize you are no more of an idiot for believing in God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit.

I like Bill Maher, but not enough to pay to go see him. His comedy has turned venomous lately and it's a big turn off.
