WASHINGTON, DC --The fervor, passion and dedication of American Politics lost one of its greatest and colorful leaders. A Groundbreaking Progressive Leader
Stephanie Tubbs Jones was elected in 1998 as the first Black woman to represent Ohio in Congress. Congresswoman Tubbs-Jones was no stranger to the support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. A five-term Democrat, Tubbs Jones was a vigorous supporter of LGBT rights.
During her time in office, Tubbs Jones voted against banning gay adoptions in DC, strongly favored same-sex domestic partnership benefits, fought for increased funding for AIDS treatment & prevention and supported more funding and stricter sentencing for hate crimes.

In 2006 she voted against constitutionally defining marriage exclusively between a man and a woman. She also voted in 2004 against banning gay marriage and in 1999 voted against banning gay adoptions.
Tubbs Jones also championed a number of other progressive issues in the areas of education, environment, healthcare, gun control, and foreign policy. At the time of her death, she sat as Chair of the Committee on Standards, was a member of the Ways and Means Committee, and subcommittees on Health, Oversight and Social Security.

Stephanie Tubbs Jones was an outstanding citizen, whose memory deserves to live on and who should be celebrated today, in a political world in which people are all too quick to guard their own turf rather than tear down the walls that divide one marginalized group from another.
Her rare courage, and her willingness to build bridges, should be an inspiration to the next generation of leaders.
