Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chairwoman of the Committee on Appropriations' Legislative Branch Subcommittee and Vice Chair of the House LGBT Equality Caucus, released a strong statement praising U.S. District Court Judge James Robinson's decision in Schroer v. Billington. In Schroer v Billington, Judge Robertson ruled that the Library of Congress discriminated against Diane Schroer when it rescinded a job offer to her after Schroer disclosed that she was transitioning from male to female.
I applaud Judge Robinson's brave but common-sense ruling that Diane Schroer was discriminated against based on her sex. A former Special Forces Operations commander, she was hands down the most qualified applicant to advise our nation's leaders of the dangers posed by terrorism. Ms. Schroer wanted only to continue to serve her country as a terrorism analyst, but was denied that opportunity for no reason other than her gender identity.
Employment discrimination strikes at a core American value that many of us take for granted: the ability to put in an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. I call upon the Congress to continue to work to pass a transgender-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
