Karl Rove Slams the McCain Campaign

When the Prince of Darkness Karl Rove says you are going too far in your campaign and being dishonest, you know you have a problem.

McCain has gone in some of his ads -- similarly gone one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the '100 percent truth' test. ...They ought to -- there ought to be an adult who says, 'Do we really need to go that far in this ad'?

I never thought these words would come out of my mouth, but I agree with Karl Rove. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little...

The Obama Campaign released this scathing statement:

In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove -- the man who held the previous record -- said McCain's ads have gone too far

They continued to hit back hard with this latest ad called "Honor":

How far down into the sewer do you have to go to have Rove call you out on "going too far"? Even the man who has made a career out of spreading lies and divisive politics thinks the McCain campaign is too dirty? I guess that "straight-talk express" has truly derailed...

This nasty, fear-mongering campaign that the McCain camp has been running shows real character, or should I say lack thereof. The constant dishonesty in TV ads and the repetitive lies on the campaign trail (keep talking about that bridge to nowhere, Sarah...) show what kind of "mavericks" these two truly are.

The only thing McCain and Palin rebel against is the truth.

Mmmm...I'm not so sure. Karl Rove strikes me as the kind of guy who'd say something like this on purpose, possibly because he's so vilified in the media that an endorsement from him might actually hurt.

I don't know why he did it, but I assure you it was not a genuine display of anything. Karl Rove left "genuine" behind decades ago.

Okay, as a science fiction fan and writer, I would say we just fell into an alternative universe. This election season has thrown so many things never seen before that if will be one of the most read about election in our history.

I don't know if ads like that are hard hitting enough. I mean, Americans don't really seem to care all that much that politicians lie (look at Bush), and saying that the other person is running a despicable campaign is what Dukakis did and lost in 88, Gore did and lost in 2000, McCain did and lost in 2000, and Kerry did and lost in 04.

I know, these campaigns don't come down to the ads themselves. I'm just very worried that these two jokers will get elected, what with the polls being so close and this proving to be a losing strategy time and time again.

Waymon, wonderful, but there are always truths plural. That is why I am waiting for the strong assault on issues and the debates to come. I think Biden will slice and dice Palin so conclusively that the forces of evil will run for cover.

In that McCain's memory is obviously failing I expect he will do as poorly against Obama. I hope that will be enough to get the midsection of the country past it's silent racism so well illustrated by Alex's posting

I have a small quibble, if that isn't redundant. Karl Rove's nickname is Turdblossom, not the Prince of Darkness. It's Bob Novack who is called the Prince of Darkness (even by his friends). Novack wouldn't want anyone to think *he* was the one that was going soft. ;-)

Is this Obama ad supposed to save his campaign? Highlighting a few negative adjectives from newspaper editorials? Most voters aren't going to care what the lofty Washington Post or New Republic thinks about McCain's campaign tactics. It would be more effective to "humanize" the Harvard intellectual -- show him playing with his kids, mixing with Wal-Mart moms, touring nursing homes or veterans' hospitals, etc. TV commercials are mainly about visual images, not words. Maybe Obama needs a new ad agency.

I don't know... It's helpful to get "what everyone else is saying" in front of the public. After all, there's nothing the general public likes more than a mob baying after blood.
