Marie Stopes International (MSI), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) focusing on sexual and reproductive health and headquartered in London, does not receive a penny of funding from the US government. But according to this Guardian article, in some places MSI does receive contraceptives and/or condoms from host country governments that receive them from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Because MSI supports safe abortions for women, the US government, under our so-called Christian-minded GW Bush-appointed administrators, is ordering those governments to cut MSI off. No more condoms for you!!
The excuse? That MSI, which does work in China, supports in concept the Chinese government's one-child policy.
The US government is cutting its funding for the supply of contraceptives to family planning clinics run by Marie Stopes International in Africa, alleging that it condones forced abortions in China.
MSI has categorically denied that it supports forced abortions or coercive sterilisation in China or anywhere else in the world and says that the actions of the Bush government will result in more abortions in Africa, as women will be unable to get contraceptives and will end up with unwanted pregnancies.
One of George Bush's first acts after becoming president was to stop all US funds to foreign organisations that helped women in any way to get an abortion, including providing advice. The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) lost $34m that Congress had appropriated for it in 2002. [I remember this.]
According to MSI, the inevitable consequence will be more abortions. It estimates that it will lose $1.5m worth of supplies in the next year, resulting in 325,000 extra unwanted pregnancies in the six African countries and 65,000 abortions.
"At a time when governments have pledged to increase their commitment to improving the health of women, only the Bush administration could find logic in the idea that they can reduce abortion and promote choice for women in China by causing more abortion," said Hovig. [emphasis mine]
If McCain/Palin win, you can be absolutely 100% certain that more women will die from back-alley abortions, and men and women from AIDS, worldwide. And I'd wager the value of my rapidly plunging stock portfolio that Roe v Wade will be overturned before their first term is over.
Btw, if you haven't seen Bill Maher's movie, "Religulous," go NOW! It's fantastic, timely, and I applaud Maher's courage in making it. I also strongly agree with his message that it's time for atheists and non-dogmatists to organize and stand up to the superstitious, ignorance-glorifying religious fanatics of the world.
