We're Fighting Back, Join Us!
The far right has made Gainesville "ground zero" in their effort to role back hard-won antidiscrimination protections while dehumanizing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Floridians. Equality Florida is standing up to this blatant bigotry.
In partnership with the local political action committee "Equality is Gainesville's Business" (EQGB), Equality Florida has taken a leadership role in educating voters and our statewide LGBT community about the importance of defeating this far right effort.
Thirty-two years have passed since Anita Bryant repealed anti-LGBT discrimination protections in Miami-Dade and the far right is still at it! We're committing major resources, including staff, to ensure the far right doesn't drive Gainesville back to those dark ages.
An extremist group has placed a charter amendment on the City of Gainesville's March 24th ballot, which would repeal LGBT antidiscrimination protections in housing, employment, and public accommodations within city limits.
This threat to Gainesville is a threat to Florida. ?Every community in Florida that has stepped forward to denounce discrimination against LGBT people will be in danger if we fail to stop this divisive and mean-spirited initiative.
Defeating the far right in Gainesville is Equality Florida's top local priority in 2009 and we're investing major resources.
* Joe Saunders, our statewide field director, has been placed on leave so that he can head up the opposition as Campaign Manager.
* Through Equality Florida's outreach effort, over $10,000 has already been raised, much of it from local donors, to defeat the repeal effort. And we're committed to raising even more through regular appeals to our members.
* Equality Florida is providing critical infrastructure and campaign expertise to the effort.
* We're capitalizing on the enormous growth in our outreach capability gained from the Vote No On 2 campaign to defeat this measure.
Gainesville represents our best opportunity to stop the far right's momentum coming out of the past election. If we don't stop this repeal effort in Gainesville, it is sure to spread to every community in Florida that has created protections for LGBT citizens.
We must stop this here and now in Gainesville.
