I'm a big fan of fantasy novels and King Arthur legends. One of the recurring storylines common in the genre is hunting the white stag - a metaphor for the hero seeking purity and justice. Of course, the white deer is elusive and rarely seen - let alone actually caught or killed.
With Barack Obama as our President, the LGBT community feels comfortable hunting the white stag as we fight for our own justice and nobility - employment nondiscrimination, hate crimes protections, ability to serve our country, and recognition of our relationships. While I often worry that some of these forays into the wild woods won't be fruitful, at least now we've actually seen the white deer.

Not to mention access to housing, health insurance, comprehensive sex education, and an end to police entrapment!! To name a few...

Exactly, Nick. Arthur kept hunting the stag because as close as he got, he was never able to actually kill it.
As you've proven, our list is ever expanding and encompassing. We'll never reach our goal for justice and equality either; the utmost will ever be out of reach and we'll be striving to get there - hunting our own stag.

There's a rare herd of white deer in northern California too. I used to see them when I lived in Mendocino County in the late 1980s. They used to live at San Simeon, and had been brought there by Wm. Randolph Hearst. They're an endangered species of deer that are native to the Eastern Mediterranean. Today they live on a private property near Laytonville, and sometimes you can see them up along the highway, just inside the fence. Magical creatures!
