THEN:

  1. I was a high school senior in Winchester, Indiana. I had already come out to my parents, teachers and classmates.
  2. My favorite class was journalism; I was the editor for the yearbook and features editor for the school newspaper.
  3. I'd just moved back into my mother's house for my last semester after getting my own apartment at 16.
  4. I had a girlfriend and a boyfriend. They knew about each other and didn't mind.
  5. I'd never heard of a transgender person.
  6. I worked for The Palladium Item newspaper as a stringer covering Randolph County and exciting stuff like school board meetings.
  7. My best friend was a "straight" guy. You could cut the sexual tension between us with a knife, but we never had sex.
  8. I dreamed of being a "professional gay" that worked solely for gay rights.
  9. I loved video games and often stayed up too late playing them. My faves were Mario Brothers 2 and Zelda.
  10. This was the first time I dyed my hair. Sadly, it wouldn't be the last.

NOW:

  1. While I left Winchester long ago, I have never lived outside of Indiana.
  2. I still make my living by my typewriter computer only now I write about LGBT issues. I'm a "professional gay."
  3. My favorite place to sit/talk/work is still the kitchen table.
  4. I recently started talking to my old girlfriend again on Facebook. Apparently, she did mind.
  5. My parents and I still have a very strained relationship.
  6. My best friends are a trans man and a lesbian.
  7. I don't wear contacts any more because I can't stand poking my finger in my eye. Instead, I have two pairs of glasses I switch between.
  8. I'm still the same weight I was in high school; I still love ugly sweaters too.
  9. I love video games and often stay up too late playing them. I've been playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for months.
  10. I still have horrible hair that's a bunch of unruly curls unless it's kept short.
