Virginia prison segregated lesbians, butch women

Will the wonders of stereotyping never end... A Virginia prison has been segregating butch looking women for appearing gay.

For more than a year, Virginia's largest women's prison rounded up inmates who had loose-fitting clothes, short hair or otherwise masculine looks, sending them to a unit officers derisively dubbed the "butch wing," prisoners and guards say.

Dozens were moved in an attempt to split up relationships and curb illegal sexual activity at the 1,200-inmate Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, though some straight women were sent to the wing strictly because of their appearance, the inmates and corrections officers said.

Because, you know, moving all the lesbians to one area of the prison will stop them from having sex with other women. FAIL

Well we all know how progressive Virginia is. They some times make Texas look downright liberal.

For all those that say that judgements against gays and lesbians have not very much to do with gender issues, take this incident to heart.

Lets see, if you have short hair, act butch, work out with the weights, refuse to wear makeup, swear like a drunken sailor and act just like your average tough guy, but you don't have a penis, then you must be a lesbian, even if we haven't been able to prove it by catching you with another woman in bed and having sex.

I don't call that sexual harassment, I call that gender harassment and don't say that our GLB and T issues don't overlap.

That has been myy point about the need for an inclusive ENDA for some time, Angela. Butch Lesbians have no real protections without it and as a Lesbian activist, I find that unacceptable.

As for stopping sex, yes, of course putting all of the Lesbians together is going to have that effect....yeah, right...

I think the idea was to prevent lesbian prisoners from converting straight prisoners. Which is absurd in itself, as is the assumption that every butch-looking prisoner is lesbian and every femme-looking prisoner is straight.

Right, everyone knows we have a quota to make, even in prison. I mean we can't have those sexual deviants turning our wholesome daughters into lesbians. All those poor thieves, swindlers, and murderesses being subjected to homosexual depravity! How shocking!!!

(film at 11:00, we know how the straight guys just love to watch, for educational reasons.)
