A recent meeting called by Ward 5 ANC Commissioner Robert King to build support for a Prop 8 style ballot measure in DC may have had low turnout, but that's no reason to let our guard down.

The National Organization for Marriage and its $6 million budget have moved into DC to ban marriage equality in the District and, as Rev. Anthony Evans said to the Washington Blade:

We are going to force an initiative on the city to allow every District resident to have a say so on this issue of gay marriage.

and

First of all we do not view the gay marriage as a civil rights issue. Its not a civil rights issue.

After the jump the Washington Blade video from the meeting

A few of weeks ago King sent a letter to all 236 ANC commissioners urging them to pass resolutions calling for a "people's vote" on whether or not gays should be allowed to marry.

While King is seeking to frame his call for a Prop 8 style vote on the rights of gay and lesbian families as a matter of democracy, its important that we make clear that this is an attack on our families disguised as democracy.

When asked by James Davis at the meeting if the people of Alabama should have been able to vote on the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, King, who is Black, said that he would not "talk about that."

That response says all you really need to know.
